Jets softball gets offensive in sweep of Gwinn

GWINN — Five different Jeffers Jets softball hitters had at least three hits in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Gwinn Modeltowners Wednesday on the road. In the nightcap, six different Jets had at least three hits. The Jets won both games, 27-1 and 23-2.

Batting cleanup in the opening game, catcher Naomi Frahm went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five knocked in to help pace the Jets. In the second game, she continued that torrid pace, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five more batted in.

In the first game, the Jets scored seven runs in the first inning, then pasted 14 on the board in the second, before adding six more in the third to earn the win by the mercy rule.

Shortstop Meg Ruohonen started things off right away with a leadoff walk. Pitcher Janet Mattila followed with a double to left field, which scored Ruohonen. Third baseman Elli Kuntze walked. Frahm doubled to center, scoring both Mattila and Kuntze.

First baseman Svea Johnson was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Frahm scored on a defensive error as Pearl Raffaelli reached first base safely. Right fielder Evelyn Sturos then singled to short, scoring both Raffaelli and Johnson. Two batters after that, Ruohonen doubled to right, bringing Sturos home.

Gwinn got a run back in the bottom half of the first inning, but that was as close as they got.

Then the Jets’ offensive engines roared.

Kuntze led off the second inning with a single to third base. Frahm launched a two-run home run to left field. Johnson was hit by a pitch. Left fielder Kylee Andrews singled to center. Raffaelli loaded the bases when she reached on an error. Johnson scored on a wild pitch, and then Sturos tripled, scoring Andrews and Raffaelli. Jeffers led 12-1 at that point.

Second baseman Lilah HIll reached on an error, scoring Sturos. Ruohonen doubled to left field, scoring Hill. Mattila reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. Kuntze then doubled to right, scoring both runners. Two batters later, Johnson doubled to left. Andrews brought her home with a single to center.

Raffaelli kept things rolling with a double to left field, putting runners on the corners again. Two batters later, Hill singled to right field. Andrews scored, Raffaelli scored on an error during the play, then Hill scored on the same error, and the Jets found themselves up 21-1 at that point.

In the top of the third, Kuntze led off with a triple to right field. Frahm singled to left field, scoring Kuntze in the process. Johnson followed with a single to left. Andrews brought Frahm home with a single to left field. Raffaelli then walked, loading the bases. Sturos doubled to left, scoring both Johnson and Andrews. Two batters later, Ruohonen singled to right, scoring Sturos and Raffaelli.

Mattila gave up three hits in the circle to earn the win for the Jets. She struck out four and walked four as well.

In the nightcap, the Jets found themselves down 5-3 after the first inning and 8-3 after two innings, before racking up seven over the next two innings to get to within one at 11-10. Then, two innings later, exploded for 13 to put the game out of reach.

Just like in the first game, Ruohonen sparked a fast start for the Jets. She singled to right field. Mattila reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. Two batters later, Frahm doubled to left field, scoring both runners. Two batters later, Sturos doubled to center, scoring Frahm, and putting Jeffers up 3-0.

The Modeltowners put up five in the bottom half of the inning to get the lead, their first of the day.

The Jets were held off the board in the top of the second, then saw Gwinn post three in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the third, Kuntze started a rally with a triple to right field to lead off. Frahm grounded out to follow, but Kuntze scored anyway. Andrews doubled to center. Two batters later, she scored on a wild pitch before Lydia Larson grounded out to end the inning.

The Modeltowners added three more runs to take a six-run lead, 11-5, after three innings.

Then Jeffers found its offense in the top of the third.

Johnson drew a leadoff walk. Raffaell also walked. Ruohonen singled to right field, scoring Johnson. Mattila then singled to center, scoring both Raffaelli and Ruohonen and suddenly, the Jets were back within three, 11-8.

Kuntze doubled to left field. Mattila scored on the play. Kuntze made it to third before the play came to an end due to a defensive error. She then scored when Frahm doubled to center.

The game remained a one-run lead for Gwinn until the top of the sixth. That’s when the Jets’ bats caught fire.

Mattila led off with a single to right field. Kuntze tripled to right field, scoring Mattila. Frahm doubled to center after Kuntze scored on a wild pitch. Andrews singled to center, scoring Frahm.

Sturos brought Andrews home with a double to left field. Larson then scored Sturos with a single to right. Johnson singled to score Larson, and the Jets led 16-11.

Raffaelli singled to center. Ruohonen grounded out, but Johnson scored anyway. Mattila then hit a ground ball and reached on an error, scoring Raffaelli. Two batters later, Frahm singled to right field, scoring Mattila.

Andrews singled to center field. Sturos singled to second, scoring Frahm. Larson walked, loading the bases. Andrews scored on a wild pitch. Sturos then scored on an error. Finally, Johnson singled to second, scoring Larson.

Mattila came back up for a third time in the inning when she grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning, but by then, the Jets led 23-11.

Gwinn got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but could not get any closer before the third out was recorded, ending the game.
