L’Anse lowers age for firefighters

L’ANSE — L’Anse’s fire department is looking to add more younger members.

The L’Anse Village Council approved changes in the fire department bylaws to increase membership from 20 to 25 firefighters, and to reduce the age requirement from 21 to 18, Village Manager Bob LaFave said.

The reduced age minimum is consistent with Copper Country Fire Association guidelines, LaFave said.

“It’ll allow the department to work on transition, as we’ve got some older members that are looking towards their retirement, and it’ll allow some new young folks to come on,” he said at Monday’s meeting. “But we also don’t want to be pushing people who have done so much service for the community out the door, either.”

The council also heard reports from other village departments.

L’Anse’s Waterfront Park has opened, including the marina, new restrooms, fish cleaning station and park sprinklers.

The floating dock is scheduled to be installed Tuesday.

“When that dock goes in, that’s a sure sign of spring,” said Village President Ron Ervast. “Let’s hope it stays that way.”

The village has ordered a newer dock, which should be ready by this fall, LaFave said.

L’Anse’s new police vehicle has arrived, but is still waiting on equipment. A new police officer has just started at the academy.

L’Anse’s new fire truck should be ready by the end of June. It went through a pump test last Friday. New Jaws of Life equipment will be delivered this week.

The council also heard East River Drive has been reopened after being closed for a week due to a sinkhole after a 4-foot culvert failed.

Repaving that section of road is in process, LaFave said. Repair work on the culvert should be reimbursable through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, LaFave said.
