HOUGHTON — A driver was in stable condition Wednesday after his vehicle lost control near the Michigan Technological University Golf Course and hit a utility pole.

Michigan State Police troopers responded around 11:25 a.m. to the crash, which occurred on U.S. 41.

A 70-year-old man was driving a Dodge passenger car south on the highway when his vehicle slid off the road and hit the pole, snapping it in half and sending live power lines onto the highway, the MSP said in a release.

Mercy EMS transported the driver to UP Health System – Portage, where he was treated. Driving too fast for the icy conditions is believed to be a factor in the crash, the MSP said.

U.S. 41 was closed between Denton and Waylene roads for about two hours after the crash.

Troopers were assisted by Houghton City Police, Michigan Tech Public Safety, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Mercy EMS, Michigan Department of Transportation, Upper Peninsula Power Co. and the Huron Township Fire Department.
