April 15 • Public meeting regarding Houghton County Jail, 10 a.m. to noon, Houghton County Courthouse, 401 E. Houghton Ave. Houghton. The Houghton County Board of Commissioners will hold an open meeting to hear comments from residents about proposals for a new county jail. The meeting will be held in the Circuit Courtroom on the second floor. Alternatives being developed by the jail-planning consultants will be introduced. Holocaust survivor to speak

Temple Jacob in Hancock is sponsoring an appearence by Holocaust survivor Irene Miller, who will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday April 15, in the auditorium at Houghton High School Her presentation is free and open to the public. Miller is author of Into No Man’s Land: A Historical Memoir, which tells the story of her family trying to escape the horrors of the Holocaust only to wind up in a frozen field in no man’s land, then in a Siberian labor camp, and finally starving in an impoverished village in Uzbekistan.
