Minor accident in Hancock

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette

One driver suffered minor injuries in a two-car crash on U.S. 41 on Quincy Hill around noon Thursday. The crash occurred around 11:50 a.m., when a 2015 Buick driven by Barbara Holmes, 83, of Kent, Washington, failed to properly yield at the posted intersection at Campus Drive, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Turning left onto U.S. 41, Holmes struck a southbound Buick driven by Cecelia Erickson, 67, of Hancock.

After being struck, Erickson’s vehicle veered out of control and rolled over on its roof, coming to rest on its side.

Neither Erickson or her passenger — Sarah Kangas, 77, of Battleground, Washington — were injured in the crash. Both had to be extricated from the vehicle by Hurontown Fire Department’s Jaws of Life.

Mercy EMS transported Holmes to UP Health System — Portage for minor injuries.

Occupants of both vehicles wore their seatbelts; airbags also deployed in each vehicle. Assisting at the scene were the Hancock Police Department, Mercy EMS, Hurontown Fire Department, Dave’s Service Wreckers and Quincy-Franklin-Hancock Township Fire Department.

Starting at $4.00/week.
