Making a splash

Laurium made wise investment

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette After a little more than a month of operating, Laurium’s Splashing Through Laurium splash pad has proven far more popular to village residents than the village council anticipated.

LAURIUM – With temperatures above normal that past couple of week’s the village’s “Splash Through Laurium Splash Pad is, as one trustee said, a huge success.

Village Council Trustee John Galbraith said the popularity of the splash pad has far exceeded expectations.

“I make a point of driving by there, especially on really warm days in the afternoons,” he said, “and that place is just packed.”

Galbraith said it is definitely a crowd pleaser and was well worth acquiring for the village.

“It’s the best money we’ve ever spent,” he said.

Village President Ian Lewis said the water does not constantly run at the pad. Rather, it is activated by someone pushing a button.

“It takes a few pushes,” he said. “As people are starting to learn, if they give a few seconds after pushing the button, then push the button again, the water pressure increases and eventually caps out at its capacity.”

The pad was designed to be an all-inclusive recreational space, featuring low-flow water elements such as spray jets and nozzles to provide enjoyment, while promoting water efficiency. It includes a zero-depth entry and accessibility features to accommodate individuals with varying degrees of mobility and sensory perception, ensuring that everyone in the community can participate.

The pad was under development for more than a year. In March, 2025, the village received a $45,000 donation from the Keweenaw Health Foundation to assist in funding the splash pad. In May 2025, Laurium partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to complete its final aspects.

In January, the village was awarded a $20,000 grant from Copper Shores Community Health Foundation through the its Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund as part of the village’s Get Active Initiative.

On June 8, the village council conducted the grand opening of its splash pad, which included a ribbon cutting ceremony and free ice cream treats.

Starting at $4.00/week.
