Hancock students march for Earth Day
HANCOCK — Several Hancock Central High School students spent their sixth hour marching across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Friday in honor of Earth Day.
Most of the students were from Hancock’s Interact Club, a youth community service group affiliated with Rotary International.
“We’re just trying to do our part to remind people that it’s Earth Day, do their part, recycle, care for the earth a little bit,” said club secretary Eleanor Tchida.
Students carried signs including “Be Green,” “Happy Earth Day” and “Good Planets Are Hard to Find,” drawing supportive car honks.
“Some we’ve had for years, some we made today,” said treasurer Austin Jordan.
Interact also hosts school blood drives and does two highway cleanups per year. They’ve organized donations to the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter in Calumet and delivered dictionaries to local schools.
“We haven’t had a whole ton of projects this year because our numbers have been down, but we’re recovering after COVID,” Tchida said. “Hopefully our numbers will be up again and we’ll have more projects next year.”
