No need to roam
Vacation closer to home
Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The Keweenaw is unparalleled for its natural beauty and scenic wonders, as seen in this photo of Copper Harbor. The region provides countless leisure opportunities, everything from picnic spots to swimming to agate hunting, often all at one location.
HOUGHTON – A recent survey by the University of Michigan found that the cost of living continues to be a first-order concern, with 57% of consumers spontaneously mentioning that high prices were eroding their personal finances, up from 50% last month.
On May 13, the Bank of America Institute reported: According to the 2026 its Summer Travel Outlook, around 30% of respondents say higher gas prices won’t change their summer travel plans, but others are looking to take fewer trips or cut back on items like accommodations.
On May 20, WDET Detroit Public Radio reported similar findings. It reported that Gas Buddy published a seasonal travel survey. 56% of the people who responded say they plan to drive more than two hours to their destination this summer. That’s down from 69% in 2025, and 67% said gas prices are directly impacting their driving plans. 36% said rising costs are causing them to take fewer road trips.
For residents of the Keweenaw, however, this may be good news. For those planning to drive more than two hours to their destination, while having take fewer road trips – home is the ideal travel destination. The travel distance from one end of the Copper Country to the other, Ontonagon to Copper Harbor, is just 97 miles, or two hours.
As Jesse Wiederhold, managing director of Visit Keweenaw points out: “If you’re already here, you already have the perfect summer playground.”
Wiederhold said for residents on a restricted budget, the Keweenaw has an excellent value proposition.
“Once you’re here, everything – most things – are free,” he said. “So while folks are feeling the pinch in their wallets with the gas prices, Michigan is a drivable destination, so that is something to consider.”
The Keweenaw, Wiederhold, is an old-fashioned region, as residents can have the same fun as out-of-area visitors, but without the costs.
“We see a lot of locals are actually visiting the same places as tourist people coming to town,” he said, “so it’s almost the same effect that locals may be going to the same place tourists go to.”
Many of those places include potential destinations away from the main traffic arteries.
“I think a lot of people get stuck to the idea of U.S. 41,” Wiederhold said, “especially a lot of us who live here. ‘We’re going to Copper Harbor for the day.’ But you have truly fun destinations like Gay. Explore the stamp sands. Explore the beach there. Go to the Gay Bar, go to the festivals in Gay, visit the Gay School museum.”
For those seeking family adventure, the Keweenaw is also a nationally renowned fishing region, said Wiederhold, with fishing destinations including Lake Superior and countless inland lakes, rivers, streams and creeks.
“Most of our inland lakes have boat launch sites,” he said, “and many have lodging facilities located on the lake, some with boat rentals available.”
For local residents seeking a vacation experience beyond a day trip, Wiederhold said there is an abundance of local hotels and cabins that offer accommodations.
“A lot of people have never been to places like the Mariner, the Mountain Lodge, they haven’t stayed in a lot of the cabins that are right in their own backyard,” he said. “So, especially folks who live in the Houghton-Hancock area, go up north for a great vacation at home.”
