Stomp Out the Stigma event

EAGLE RIVER — Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a “Stomp Out the Stigma” event. The event will be held on Thursday May 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the courthouse in Eagle River.

The event, which is focused on raising awareness on mental health and removing the stigma that sometimes goes along with it, will include a panel with representatives from many different agencies. “We will also be having an open conversation on current mental health trends and what these agencies and groups are doing to meet that demand,” said Sheriff Curt Pennala.

“There are a lot of great resources out there for people,” Pennala said, “but sometimes we lack the ability to connect the dots.”

The Mental Health Panel will also include representatives from Copper Country Mental Health, Upper Great Lakes Family Health, Great Lakes Recovery Center, Dial Help, Phoenix House and more.

One of the panelists who will be the moderator of the event will be Dr. Michelle Morgan who is a retired specialist in Psychiatry.

The meeting is also meant to be part of the catalyst for change, with input being sought from the public. Talks are ongoing for starting another resource in the area that will focus on prevention. “We would really like to get the public’s input. Ultimately, we want to get people the help they need, prior to them having some type of crisis,” Pennala said.

If you cannot attend the event in person, a zoom link for the event is posted on the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
