Houghton—Portage Township retains school board officers

HOUGHTON — Houghton-Portage Township Schools is keeping the same slate of board officers for 2023.
At Monday’s meeting, the board reappointed Amanda Massaway as president, Rob Fay as vice president, Nels Christopherson as treasurer and Brett Burns as secretary.
Two years has been the traditional length for keeping board assignments in place, although it has been stretched to three in some cases, said Trustee Buck Foltz.
The board will continue to meet on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Next month will be
the exception, as the meeting shifts to Feb. 21 to avoid a day where there is no school.
Administrators reported on benchmark testing and other activities.
Superintendent Anders Hill gave an update on the district’s strategic plan. The district’s administrative team met with facilitators from the Michigan Association of School Boards. They took priorities identified by district focus groups in November — academics, programs, culture and learning environment, communications, personnel, leadership and operations — and created actionable steps for next year. The MASB facilitator could present the strategic plan at the February board meeting, Hill said.
Houghton Middle School will resume its annual Cabin Fever day, said Principal Julie Filpus. Exchange students from Finland and Spain will give presentations and answer questions about life in their respective countries. From there, students will choose from among activities such as skating, tubing, cooking and art.
High school sophomores will attend a Career and Technical Education expo next month prior to signing up for 2023-24 classes.
Athletic Director John Sanregret reported on the booster club, which has raised $38,000 for equipment over the past year and a half, he said. The athletic department’s next project is a track record board for the gymnasium.
