TRIO Pre-College Programs to host Financial Aid Night

On the list of things that need to be done before a student goes to college, having enough financial aid to cover the costs usually tops the list. For this reason, TRIO Pre-College Programs, in collaboration with the Portage Lake District Library, is hosting a Financial Aid Night on Monday, Nov. 4. The event with begin at 6 p.m. with an overview of financial aid. At 6:30 p.m., families are invited to complete their FAFSA form. TRIO staff will be present to assist and answer questions as needed. The event is free for the public.

The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a required federal form for any intended college student to receive federal financial aid, including grants and loans. In addition, many colleges require the form for students to receive institutional aid. More than two-thirds of US students utilize federal aid granted from the FAFSA to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room & board. Roughly $46 billion dollars in federal aid is given each year.

“The form is much easier than it was in the past,” says TRIO Academic Advisor, Kailee Laplander, “But many families still request help. We are happy to help.”

Families will need social security numbers, 2018 tax data and any records of untaxed income for both the student and parents/guardians to complete the FAFSA. Interested participants can call 906-487-7382 with any questions prior to the event.

TRIO Pre-College Programs, consisting of TRIO Talent Search & TRIO Upward Bound, are 100% grant funded by the US Department of Education and proudly hosted by Finlandia University. Both programs exist to assist students who are from a limited income home and/or potential first-generation students prepare for successful entry and completion of post-secondary education.
