Bergman’s mistake

To the editor: Rep. Jack Bergman has just ended any hope Republicans had of beating Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Since Bergman dropped his endorsement of gubernatorial hopeful, Chief James Craig and endorsed Perry Johnson, he has ensured Whitmer of her second term in office all because his feelings were hurt. In a statement, quoted in the Detroit News, Bergman said Craig had ignored “campaigning in Northern Michigan and the U.P. in favor of a self-proclaimed Detroit-centric approach.” That statement is 100% untrue. Chief Craig started campaigning in the Upper Peninsula five months ...

Public Hearing May 19

To the editor: To all concerned citizens, The Portage Township Planning Commission will hold a public meeting on May 19, 2022 (Thursday) at 7:00 pm to consider amending the Zoning Ordinance to permit seaplane operations as a special use in Portage Townships existing B-2 Zoning District. Support for Craig Waddell

To the editor: During the 30 years we’ve known him, Craig Waddell has consistently expressed empathy for the concerns and opinions of others. These are the kinds of qualities voters look for in their elected officials. Craig decides on issues only after careful listening and thorough research. He follows up those decisions with concrete action. That’s why we confidently offer our unqualified endorsement for Craig Waddell for Houghton City Council.

Support for Mike Salmi

To the editor: We are writing in support of Mike Salmi for Houghton City Council. Mike is a hard-worker and a person who will “get things done.” Mike understands the importance of discussion and the importance of hearing all sides to an issue, but is a person who will then act. Mike has a long history of community service including various coaching roles, serving as the past president of the Mont Ripley Race team, and serving as an Elder at his church. Additionally, Mike is a former U.S. Army officer and a U.S. Army Veteran having served in several deployments to Bosnia, ...

The language on the petition that was circulated read, “Shall ordinance No. 158 which eliminates the election of the village treasurer and provides for appointment of the village treasurer by the council be approved? The village attorney revised the language. Here is the question that will appear on the ballot: Shall Ordinance Number 158 of the Village of Calumet providing that the village treasurer shall be chosen by a nomination by the village president ...

Right candidate for Houghton City Council
