To the editor: Next month the Portage Township Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a proposed change to the zoning ordinance to allow a seaplane business to operate at the former Onigaming and Pilgrim Point property. This change is not temporary and will permanently alter the beautiful shoreline and the area all around Pilgrim Point as you drive into Houghton on both sides of highway 41. Hooray for children

To the editor: While canvassing in my neighborhood with the Promote the Vote petition recently, a group of curious youngsters started to accompany me. They were interested in my project, and I enjoyed telling them how important it is for adults to vote to make our country better for children. Very soon I noticed that residents were much more likely to come to the door when they saw children with me. I told the kids that they have power, and they felt pretty good about that. I also told them how lucky we are to be free to talk about politics — in some countries I would be arrested ...

Michigan Tech Book Sale Volunteers

To the editor: On Friday, April 1, the Friends of the Michigan Tech Library held their annual book sale and netted $3,575 in funds for the library. The annual sale would not be possible without the help from dozens of volunteers, including those from the Society of Intellectual Sisters, Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, Delta Zeta, Phi Kappa Tau, Delta Phi Epsilon, USG, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Tau Gamma, and the Society of African American Men. A distinction without a difference

To the editor: I think I understand why politicians don’t play nice. They’re all sort of play acting. They pump out an endless stream of little stylized dramas with stereotypical good guys and bad guys in order to get potential voters periodically enraged, loosely engaged, persistently uninformed, and generally left out in the dark. Behind closed doors and out on the golf course, politicians of both stripes endeavor to quietly please their deep-pocket donors by passing legislation written by and for the rich to keep their positions of “power” until, that is, they “retire” ...

Open skating done right

To the editor: I want to thank the crew at the Dee Stadium for an excellent winter of open skating! Jet and Jesse have provided an ice sheet to enjoy every day to all those who took part in this fun winter activity. The good news is it has been perfect for 6 months (November through April). The sad news is that open skating, and the other ice events, has come to an end at the Dee. They do a great job there providing positive activities for our community and it is very much appreciated!
