Support for Craig Waddell

To the editor: You will not find a more conscientious City of Houghton resident than Craig Waddell. I have been his neighbor for over 20 years and have seen his dedication to making our neighborhood and the city a better place in which to live. He is thorough, engaged, and truly cares about the issues that affect the residents of the city. He has been vocal about the city’s policy on rental properties and the responsibilities of landlords to maintain their properties. He has expressed concern and made suggestions on how to better deal with bridge traffic. And closer to home, he ...

Congress must act for MI kids

To the editor: Without swift action from Congress, children in Michigan are at risk of losing access to meals this summer and next school year. That’s because critical child nutrition waivers will soon expire and so far, Congress has failed to authorize USDA to extend them. These waivers are an important tool that allow schools and community organizations to serve meals in ways that work best for their communities while they grapple with ongoing pandemic-related challenges like supply chain disruptions, rising food prices and staffing shortages. But in a few months, meal ...

The significance of the cross

To the editor: At Easter time, especially, we are reminded of the significance of the cross. The cross that is the bridge to eternity with Christ in Heaven. Without this bridge, mankind falls into the bottomless pit of hate. It is the most important subject to ponder. Life is very short and the decision one makes now determines our eternal destiny. Satan is very busy distracting each person to not think about it, or to believe that the issue is stupid, narrow-minded or just unimportant. Christ in love reminds us in His Word of the ultimate importance of what He accomplished on the ...

Falcons need their boxes

To the editor: The peregrine falcon nest boxes were originally installed on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to help keep the rock pigeon numbers down. The boxes were removed when construction was done on the bridge last year. The construction has been completed. It appears that MDOT has no intention of allowing the nest boxes to be reinstalled on the bridge. I would like to know why they have reversed their decision. The falcons have returned to the bridge even though there are no nest boxes. Nesting would be easier for them if they could use the boxes again.

Creation

To the editor: I never argue about macroevolution. It does not make any sense, so it is nonsense, and I don’t have enough blind faith to believe in it. The Biblical Creation is the most logical and realistic meaning of life and is so easy to understand that a child can follow it. The evidence is all around us, just open your eyes and allow your heart to believe everything you see God has created for our good and abundant life while here on Earth. Read Genesis, Chapter 1, Verse 1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.” How God did this is even more ...

They are not worth fighting for

To the editor: During the holiday truce in the first World War, a British officer talked to a German soldier. The German told him, “I am a Saxon. You are an Anglo-Saxon. Why do we fight?” Anglo-Saxons came to Britain from Germany in the Sixth Century. Saksa (“Saxony”) is the name for Germany in the Finnish language. Putin has mentioned the kinship of Russians and Ukrainians. Both ethnic groups speak East Slavic languages and are, mostly, members of the Eastern Orthodox churches. However, Putin twisted that link between Russians and Ukrainians to justify Russia’s war ...
