Building a greener Michigan

To the editor: In the past 50 years, winter ice coverage of the great lakes has decreased about 63%, due to our warming climate. We know that in order to protect our planet from the worst impacts of climate change, we need to transition to 100% renewable energy and electrify our buildings. But HB 4575 would slow that progress in the Great Lakes State. Michigan has an important role to play when it comes to getting fossil fuels out of our buildings. Not so fast!

To the editor: Yes hopefully the U.P. will get better internet thanks to the omnibus bill passed by Congress. Northern Michigan University will be working on this project. Jack Bergman was given credit for this effort in a recent editorial letter. Not so fast! He didn’t even vote for the bill. So he does not deserve any credit even if he did take the money to fund this project.

ACA, let’s fix it!

To the editor: In my last two letters to this paper, I wrote of the insanity of the ACA which forced my three children on to Medicaid. I also detailed how the HKD would not reimburse out of network dentists unless parents of Medicaid Recipients were willing to undergo a rather intensive appeal process. Infuriating, yes. Unjust laws can be infuriating. The ACA categorizes Americans by the type of insurance they have. People who qualify for insurance through their employer must accept that insurance. They are not given a choice of the insurance their employer offers or subsidized ...

One-sided reporting

To the editor: I am very surprised and disappointed in the one-sided reporting presented in the Daily Mining Gazette regarding the Eagle Harbor Township STR Ordinance currently in development. In Mr. Jaehnig’s article “EH Twp Planning Commission may be posing a conflict of interest” dated 3/24/22, he seemingly bases his entire article on the opinion of one disgruntled man, Dr. David Moss, at Lake Madora, and an AirBnb owner from Wisconsin who doesn’t even have a stake in this issue. A cause to die for

To the editor: “Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for.” These words, written by Dag Hammarskjold, the Secretary General of the United Nations in the 1950s, came to mind as I read about the people who plotted to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. One of the men admitted in court that he was hoping to die in a shootout with the police. He was a lonely, unhappy man who thought he had found a worthy cause. Gazette shame

To the editor: The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette’s cartoon on the subject of transgender athletes was offensive, inconsiderate, and demonstrates a total lack of concern for the truth, which I thought was the purpose of a newspaper. It mocks a population faced with social scorn, resulting in an accelerated rate of suicide. The “joke” titled “March Madness” shows a male athlete telling his coach he can’t cut it so he is transferring.
