The Christmas Tree

To the editor: The modern custom of a Christmas tree does not come from any form of paganism.  There is no evidence of any pagan religion decorating a special holiday tree for their mid-winter festivals, although the Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a festival called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture.  They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. To the editor: It has been nearly a year since the former President Trump lost the election and still refuses to concede to President Biden. Trump’s Presidency was a false narrative from start to finish (Obama birtherism to Jan. 6 coup d’etat). Simply put, Trump is a pathological liar. The Presidential Office is the highest office of the land and is a place where truth matters. The consequences of lies from this office have proven to be deadly. Lights please

To the editor: It amazes me how many drivers don’t use their headlights, even near dusk under grey skies or in snowy conditions. Anyone can forget to turn them on, but when you don’t respond to quick on-and-off flashes from oncoming traffic, you just don’t care. Interestingly enough, in my observations, about three-quarters of the no-lights drivers are in big pickup trucks. What’s up with that? Justin spotting a dark vehicle near dusk, or a white car/truck in snowy conditions, is hard enough. Please help other drivers by using your headlights.

Keep praying

To the editor: Good morning from and greetings from Rockford, Illinois. This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24. I miss my morning prayer time on WMPL, but think of you often and keep you all in my prayers. I am feeling good and trying to stay strong and healthy with an in-house physical therapy program. I have met a lot of good people here and try to be a blessing to all I meet. Lord, willing, I hope to be back in the Copper Country in the spring. To the editor: Simple Kindness for Youth (SKY) would like to thank the Portage Health Auxiliary for their generous donation of $3,000 to our organization. The Portage Health Auxiliary has been a loyal supporter of SKY and we are honored and grateful for this generous donation. This donation will make a significant difference in many children’s lives. It will allow us to continue our mission to support local youth in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties.
