Houghton: What a Town!

To the editor: You might have met my mother Jerri Gray. She’s about five feet tall and a force of nature. She and the man she called the love of her life, Bill Leder, moved to Houghton about 15 years ago. Bill was easing into retirement by accepting a part-time teaching position in the civil engineering department at Michigan Tech. They bought a home and were welcomed into the community with open arms. They quickly became involved in the Unitarian church, local opera and community events. To the editor: The athletic departments at Calumet High School and Lake Linden-Hubbell High School would like to thank Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital for their help in providing sports physicals to our student-athletes this spring. Over 40 dedicated and community-minded health care professionals donated their time, expertise, and talents to ensure that C-L-K and Lake Linden-Hubbell students received a quality sports physical. To the editor:  I truly believe that Academia’s political theologies, concerning Socialism, are rationalizations designed to keep the government money flowing. Exploiting the kindness of others, by telling them, “If you follow, we will solve all of the injustice in this world.”  Knowing that Utopia cannot be achieved, I would ask, “How?”  The response will sound nothing like the answer, which is, “Give us complete and utter control over you. To the editor:  Mining Gazette readers recently received copies of The Epoch Times in their mailboxes. In case you are tempted to subscribe, you should know that this paper is published by Falun Gong. Falun Gong is variously described as a religion, a cult, or a Chinese anti-communist activist group. The group is led by Li Hongzhi, who preaches that the path to salvation involves “karmic wheels” that he plants into his followers.

Bergman on infrastructure

To the editor:  Rep. Jack Bergman is touting a recent speech in the U.S. House of Representatives in which he describes tax increases proposed by the Biden administration as “a radical tax agenda” which is “irresponsible” and “dangerous.” The tax increases were proposed as a way to pay for infrastructure improvements in legislation that is being considered. What Bergman isn’t saying is that he is either against the proposed infrastructure improvements or he would rather borrow the money, increasing the national debt. To the editor: I’m relatively new to the U.P. and something that I’ve come to appreciate is that people here relish their independence and the natural beauty of the U.P. As a person with lifelong respiratory ailments, I also really appreciate the clean air here in Copper Country. Since I’ve moved here, I’ve rarely used allergy medicine or an inhaler. The beginning of last week was overcast, not with clouds, but with wildfire smoke. Not only could I smell the pollution, but I was forced to resort to my nasal spray and allergy pills.
