Keweenaw needs wind power

To the editor: I happen to think wind turbines are majestic, beautiful. They are certainly much better looking than cell towers or ruins. They are also necessary in a land where energy costs are high and that will never change without drastic measures. Despite all the benefits and virtually no drawbacks, there are groups trying to prevent wind turbine industries in the Keweenaw, based on lies and misstatements of fact. The Keweenaw has a decades long history of making bad economic and social decisions. They cite “tradition” when what they really mean is fear of progress. They ...

Who are we going to call?

To the editor: Adolf Hitler knew the dark and unspoken doubts, fears, and demons dwelling in the hearts of the dispirited German people after WWI. Imagine, the most educationally and scientifically advanced nation on Earth suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of a ragtag, last-minute alliance of nations including the American “mongrel” nation. Germans, much like Americans, are not particularly good losers. Post-WWI Germany was a hot mess; a rolling disaster spiraling into oblivion. The once proud nation experienced near complete social, political, and economic collapse on ...

Canal Run 2021

To the editor: The 2021 Canal Run was a great success thanks to the support of many within our community! Over 100 volunteers helped to ensure nearly 700 participants had an excellent race experience. Our primary sponsors UP Health System - Portage, Finlandia University, Keweenaw Co-op Market and Deli, Portage Health Foundation, Superior National Bank, TV6, Northern Specialty Health and Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau were vital in moving this event forward. A huge thank you to the Canal Run committee who worked tirelessly over this past year to make sure the event was safe ...

Thank you DMG

To the editor: I am writing in support of a free press. The Copper Country needs the Daily Mining Gazette more now than in the 88 years I’ve been alive. It appears we are entering an era when Democracy and freedom of the press are in danger. As such, last week we renewed our Gazette subscription for a full year. Recently my wife and I watched Thunder Bay’s public television hour-long documentary on Mussolini and the growth of fascism. He initiated modern fascism. He was prior to Hitler and the model for our current authoritarian regimes. The accent of the documentary was that ...

The Big Lie

To the editor: I want to add my two cents worth to last Saturday’s letters responding to Erik Kiilunen’s earlier letter addressed to State Sen. Ed McBroom. Kiilunen called for an “independent third party” audit and tokened voting irregularities to a slow spreading cancer. In fact, the Big Lie that former President Donald Trump won the election is the cancer that needs to be eradicated. An audit organized by Republicans, who control both chambers of the Michigan Legislature, is unlikely to be independent. Besides, it is not necessary. The election wasn’t even very ...

Another recount?

To the editor: Does Eric Kiilunen really want an independent thrd party recount? I recently returned from Arizona where the Cyber Ninjas, whose CEO who is an adherent of Trump’s fake news, fake election results, and other disinformation, has been doing the re-count without any previous experience. It is rife with poorly trained cheap labor, and has so numerous inconsistencies, errors, and lack of knowledge of voting law, procedures, to explain. So look online for a professional assessment of the low aptitude of the whole process, which makes it null and void. So my advice is ...
