To the editor: We had a drive by Santa on Sunday, Dec. 13. I would like to thank all those involved. Santa, the fire department, the township, Brian and Julie, Renne, Carol, Jane, Matt, Marcy and Eric, Kathy, Maya, Lassela Insurance, the Mohawk Superette, Slim’s, Pat’s IGA, Econo Foods, Erickson — Crowley and Joe, Walmart and all those that helped and donated. To the editor: November 2020 afforded my granddaughters their first opportunity to participate as voters in a Presidential election and use their voices to help shape our democracy. They researched candidates, policy, and proposals, completed their ballots, and returned them early. They were excited to discuss how elections work and follow the returns. Then, our 1st district Congressman, Jack Bergman, stepped in to undermine their votes and the election result. To the editor: The “COVID-19 protocols” and “COVID-19 rules” in sports, including professional sports, are manifestly preposterous nonsense. Once again, the principle is restrictions placed on people who are not sick, and players are “protected” against other players and other people who are not ill, and in many cases are not even reasonably believed to be ill. Either players are too sick or injured to play, or they play (of course, in ice hockey, players going out because of an injury is hardly a given). Piling perhapses and speculation upon maybes only achieves the goal ...
To the editor: I am compelled to write to you after having listened to last nights’ City Council meeting (Feb. 24), where I saw four people destroy the livelihood of the residents who live, by choice, in Coles Creek. I know, mind my own expletive business, and I would, if these four people would have done the same. Meanwhile, they will continue to live in their perfect locations, undisturbed, as the precious paradise once adored by many, is in jeopardy. To the editor: As a new resident and coach to the U.P., I had never even heard of a “can drive” until a few months ago and had no idea what to expect when the Hancock-Lake Linden/Jeffers JV hockey team hosted one on Saturday, January 31. In a year that has been filled with challenges, uncertainty, and controversy, the can drive did what, in my opinion, is one of the best parts of sports: it brought people together. To the editor: Can the Copper Country afford to fund an experimental Finnish-themed K-8 charter school in addition to supporting the existing public schools? Proponents of the Copper Island Academy, a K-8 charter school to be located near the airport, say they intend to attract an unspecified number of students away from existing Hancock and Calumet elementary and middle schools along with the tax-supported state school aid dollars that would go along with them.
