Calumet’s miscues lead to 53-20 WIC win

IRON RIVER — Jayce Brockhagen rushed for five touchdowns and West Iron County trimmed Calumet 53-20 in West-PAC football Friday at Nelson Field.

Brockhagen, a 245-pound senior, ran for three short scores in the second and two more in the third. He covered 36 and 11 yards for the second-half scores.

“It was nice to get back home,” said WIC Coach Mike Berutti. “The kids came out ready to play and did a great job offensively and defensively.”

Five Calumet fumbles contributed to four WIC touchdowns. Brockhagen, Zach Quintero, Dylan Berlinski, Dakota Hawkes and Cayne Rowell recovered the fumbles.

The game’s first series had the Kings fumbling the ball away. Austin Persson rushed nine yards from scrimmage for the first points.

After the first of two Brent Loukus’ scores tied the score, WIC came back with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Neil Tomasoski to Caden Pellizzer. The Wykons converted two fourth-down plays on the 55-yard drive.

The Wykons owned a 33-14 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, Zach Quintero ran 14 yards for the score. The junor also kicked four extra-points in the game.

“We executed real well against a good Calumet team,” Berutti said. “I’m real proud of how they stepped up after winning ugly the past two weeks (against Houghton and Gogebic). I was real happy with the way they responded to what we’ve been talking about all week.”

Tomasoski completed five of seven passes for 133 yards, with two to Pellizzer for 70

Brockhagen rushed for 77 yards on 17 carries. Persson added 72 on 12 attempts and Tomasoski had 50 on six.

Kings’ Loukus completed nine of 90 passes for 62 yards. The junior quarterback rushed for 113 yards on six carries including a 72-yard score.

Trevor Hendrickson rushed for 39 yards on seven attempts.

The Wykons (5-1, 4-0), who moved within one game of automatically qualifying for the state playoffs, host Northland Pines on Saturday for Homecoming. Calumet (3-3, 2-3) heads to L’Anse on Friday.
