E-TC stumbles in loss to Bessemer

BESSEMER — Bessemer upset Ewen-Trout Creek 42-38 Monday night in Copper Mountain Conference girls basketball at the House of Noise.

“After Friday, losing by 40-plus points to Chassell, we had to get re-energized and refocused. We played a solid game. Defensively, we played solid,” Bessemer coach Gerry Pelissero said. “Ewen’s a solid team. As far as I’m concerned, it’s our biggest win in my three-year tenure with the Speedgirls.

“Main thing for us is we believed we could play with them.”

E-TC led 24-18 at the half and went up nine on a 3 by Elise Besonen. But Bessemer held them to 11 points the rest of the way.

Caitlin Lynch had 15 points and 18 boards for Bessemer and Taylor Manchester had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

“We were able to control the boards in the second half and they had a little bit of foul trouble,” Pelissero said. Three E-TC players fouled out.

Besonen led E-TC with 13 points and Ava Moilanen had 10.

The Panthers (5-2) go to Chassell, ranked second in the U.P., tonight. Bessemer (3-4, 2-3) goes to Lake Linden-Hubbell today.
