Dollar Bay boys remain undefeated, bury Baraga 74-38

DOLLAR BAY — The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts boys basketball team moved their winning streak to 16 games on Tuesday as they defeated the Baraga Vikings, 74-38. This was the second time these two teams had played this season, and both games had similar outcomes.

“It was a good team win,” said Blue Bolts coach Jesse Kentala. “It was our goal to get everybody some minutes tonight and I think we did a good job of that. I asked them to play fundamental basketball and they did.”

After the tip off, Baraga (2-14) took a 5-4 lead and then a 7-6 lead before the two teams tied at nine roughly halfway through the first quarter. After that, Baraga could not find the hoop, and Dollar Bay went on to score 14 more points to lead 23-9 after one.

In the second, Dollar Bay widened their lead to 25 as they outscored Baraga 23-13. Junior Davin Hill had the hot hand for the Blue Bolts with 24 points. He was deadly from three-point range as he scored six of his team’s 11 three-pointers.

“Davin is shooting the ball really these days,” said Kentala. “He’s got the green light for us.”

Ashton Janke followed with 16 points and Connor LeClaire poured in 15.

Turnovers plagued the Vikings throughout the game, and according to Baraga head coach Jon Boever, that is nothing new.

“It’s been our Achilles heel all year,” he said.

He added that not all was lost in this lopsided defeat. Boever thought his squad had made some improvements since the last time they met the Blue Bolts.

“When we put our minds to it, we ran our plays very well tonight,” he said. “It was important for us to play at our pace and not have them dictate, and I thought we did that better than the past.”

Boever noted the strong play of senior Ryan Owens in the first half and junior Presley Rasanen in the second. Both had six points on the evening.

“Ryan did well early on for us,” said Boever. “He has been a real staple for us. I liked Presley’s aggressiveness in the second half as he took the ball to the hoop. We need more of that from him.”

The Baraga coach also gave praise to a strong Blue Bolt team.

“Dollar Bay has so many ways to attack you,” he said. “They will come at you inside and outside or hit you off the screen. Their shooting is just phenomenal.”

The Blue Bolts have four more regular season games. Next up are the Hawks from Republic-Michigamee on Friday at home.

Baraga will be at Ewen Trout-Creek that same night.
