Volleyball: Chassell defeats rival Jeffers, 3-1

CHASSELL — Old rivals Jeffers and Chassell met up in the season volleyball finale Tuesday night at the Helakoski Memorial Gymnasium.

Chassell coach Karli McMullen said the tight match won 3-1 by her team (25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15) was not unexpected.

“We seem to always have tough matches with them,” McMullen said. “It was a good match for us to get ready for the tournaments.”

Matty Holombo, one of even seniors on the team honored on Parents Night, racked up a team-leading 21 assists.

“Matty did a really good job tonight,” McMullen noted. “She kept the ball moving.”

Coach Rachel Torp’s Jets rebounded in the second set behind the play of Savannah Asiala and Maria Johnson to even it up.

But the Panthers (8-1) took control after that as seniors Maelene Warren, Trisha Pietila and Alia Palosaari chipped in.

Warren had 11 assists and 6 kills, Pietila contributed 4 kills, 4 blocks and 10 digs; and Palosaari was good for 4 kills and 4 digs.

Chassell visits Baraga on Monday in an opening round district match.
