Fortner, Flivvers shoot down Jets 6-3

IRON MOUNTAIN — Junior forward Hunter Fortner tallied four goals and an assist as Kingsford powered past Jeffers 6-3 Thursday at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Kingsford took the lead 2:32 into the game as Fortner scored a one-timer. Less than two game minutes later, senior Jack Perpich got the puck past Jets goalie Simon Rajala.

“A good overall effort again tonight,” Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge said. “Jumping out ot a quick lead is always good.”

Fortner added his second goal of the period, with 12 seconds remaining. For the first nine minutes of the period, the puck stayed in the Flivvers zone. For most of the last five minutes, the puck stayed in Jeffers zone, though they were unable to get the puck past Kingsford goalie Evan Anderson.

The second period was very chippy, with both teams sending several players to the penalty box. No team really had an advantage with the puck in their zone more than the other.

“We took some dumb penalties in the second,” Wedge said. “They actually made an adjustment in the second and it gave our defense trouble. We made an adjustment at second intermission. Our third period was then better than the second.”

Fortner added his third goal of the contest early in the second period. The Jets lite their goal lamp three times in the second period. With the Hillstrom brothers each recording a goal, while teammate Cooper Burkman added Jeffers’ third and final goal of the game with 29 seconds remaining.

A 4-on-4 in the middle of the period, saw Fortner net his fourth goal of the game. Kreski added an insurance goal for the Flivvers a few minutes later.

“We were pretty fired up for this game, we thought we’d play with them closer than what we did,” said Jeffers head coach Pat Nettell. “We had a terrible game tonight, lots of ‘Hockey 101’ mistakes. There’s no excuse for it.”

Kingsford (2-1 GLHC) visits the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton on Monday to play the Jets again.

The Flivvers travel to GLHC powerhouses Calumet on Thursday, Feb. 18 and Marquette on Feb. 20.
