Volleyball: Jeffers sweeps Ewen-Trout Creek, 3-0

PAINESDALE — With big swings and consistent serves, the Jeffers Jets defeated the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers in three straight sets on Tuesday night with scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-22.

The first set kicked off early with a Jeffers (10-1) service run of six with their libero Carli Wiitala at the line. She turned a 7-5 lead into a 12-5 tilt.

The Panthers (9-2) came back and tied it at 13-all. It remained tied at every point out until 20.

Again, it was s Wiitala who pushed the score to 23-20. The Panthers came roaring back to tie it at 23 but the Jets were not going down easy and pulled out a 26-24 victory.

“That was our best set,” said Panthers head coach Kaitlin Ruotsala. “Other wise in the second and third set, we were flat footed.”

With senior Savannah Asiala at the line, the Jets kicked off a 6-0 run to start the second. Her service was solid and spot on. So were her swings at the net.

“She gets up there and has a rifle, said Jets head coach Rachel Sondgerath. “At the same time, the Panthers were able to recover with some solid digs.”

A 6-0 lead turned into a 15-8 lead and then a 21-13 point difference. The Jets closed out the second set 25-17.

In the third, the Panthers took a brief lead with Kate Borseth at the line. After a 3-3 tie, she pushed the score to 6-5. That did not last long as the Jets moved ahead to a 9-7 score and eventually 16-9.

“Again in that third set, I thought we hit the ball well,” Sondgerath said. “That certainly is our strong point this year.”

The Panthers didn’t give up. With Borseth back at the line and a strong defense in front of her, she and her squad were able to close in on a 23-20 score, but that’s as close as it got. The Jets closed out the set and match with a 25-22 win.

Allie Pietila and Rena Kangas led the Jets with seven kills. Sarah Johnson had four aces on the night.

“I thought we did well tonight,” added Sondgerath, “we just need to talk more.”
