Dollar Bay’s Thomas sets pair of UP Finals records in final showing

KINGSFORD — Nik Thomas put an exclamation point at the end of his high school track career with two record-setting performances in the Upper Peninsula Division 3 Finals here Saturday.
The Dollar Bay senior set a U.P. and school record in the 1600-meter run in 4:25.91 seconds, then added a meet record in the 3200 at 10:05.59.
His latest achievement topped the previous records of 4:28.68 and 10:08.51 by Bessemer’s Uriah Aili three years ago.
Thomas also won the 800 (2:01.27) and placed fourth in the 400 (53.03).
It was Pickford, however, which was crowned champion for the first time in a decade with 91 points. Runner-up Munising scored 82 and defending champ Dollar Bay had 56.
Ewen-Trout Creek senior Jonah Nordine was runner-up in the 800 (2:06.39), 1600 (4:40.3) and 3200 (10:26.51).
Dollar Bay was runner-up in the 3200 relay (9:13.63) and A.J. Datto placed third in the 110 hurdles (17.59).
Baraga’s Christian Brown took second in discus at 115 feet, two inches and Ontonagon’s 400 relay (46.55) was runner-up.
Ontonagon’s Reece LaBine placed third in the 100 (11.81) and 200 (24.17) and the Gladiators were third in the 1600 relay (3:46.44).
Also placing third was Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Travis Ongie in pole vault (11-0).
Marquette retained its D1 crown by squeezing past Kingsford 138-137. They were followed by Houghton 56 and Calumet 50.
Calumet’s Dryden Nelson won the 100 (11.37) and took third in the 200 (23.39).
Houghton senior and North Dakota State University recruit Eric Weiss was runner-up in the 800 (2:03.18) and 3200 (10:07.12) and third in the 1600 (4:37.2).
Marquette junior Carson Vanderschaaf set a U.P. record in the 3200 (9:46.53), surpassing the old mark (9:50.03) by Marquette’s Lance Rambo seven years ago.
The Gremlins added a second in the 3200 relay (8:35.36) and Zack Horsch was runner-up in pole vault (11-0).
Calumet’s Sincere Brooks was runner-up in disc (132-1) and Richard Probst took third in the 110 hurdles (16.97) and 300s (41.86).
Ishpeming copped D2 with 116 points, followed by Iron Mountain 102 and St. Ignace 63.
Jeffers’ Tavin Larson was runner-up in the 1600 (4:56.34). Simone Barp placed third in the 800 (2:14.58) and Chance Bridges took third in shot (40-1).
Eli Ostermeyer provided L’Anse with a first in discus (114-1) and placed second in shot (40-10 1/2). Nathan Hochstein captured high jump (5-11) and was runner-up in long jump (18-3).
