Huskies host 57th GLI in Grand Rapids
Michigan Tech is hosting 57th annual Great Lakes Invitational at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Dec. 27-28.
The format returns to a single-elimination tournament featuring the Huskies, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Ferris State. The 2020-21 GLI was canceled because of COVID-19. The 2021-22 iteration was a showcase in Ann Arbor and East Lansing.
This will be the 17th tournament featuring four Michigan-based teams, and the sixth without the University of Michigan since the Wolverines joined as a tournament mainstay in 1974.
Ticket packages go on sale in early August.
“We’re really looking forward to getting back to a tournament-style GLI,” Michigan Tech head coach Joe Shawhan said. “It’s always a highlight of our season, with quality competition. Our fans and alumni do a great job of supporting us wherever we go, but it’s especially strong at the GLI. It always feels like home.”
It’s the first time the tournament will be hosted at Van Andel Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins, which includes recent Michigan Tech forward Trenton Bliss.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with Van Andel Arena and the Grand Rapids Griffins along with the administrators and coaches at Michigan State, Western Michigan, and Ferris State to continue the illustrious history of this premier college hockey tournament. We look forward to adding to the great traditions of the tournament and creating exciting memories for the student-athletes, coaches, and fans.”
The tournament will begin with a doubleheader on Dec. 27 as Michigan Tech plays Western Michigan at 3:30 p.m. Michigan State plays Ferris State at 7 p.m. The winners advance to the GLI Championship at 7 p.m. Dec. 28. The third-place game is prior to the championship, at 3:30 p.m.
