DETROIT — For their opening game of the GLIAC playoffs, the Michigan Tech Huskies volleyball team faces the Wayne State Warriors on the road Wednesday night.

The Huskies and Warriors have already faced each other twice this season, with each team winning at home in sweeps.

Michigan Tech won the first meeting on Oct. 8, 25-12, 25-21, and 25-19.

The Huskies were able to keep Warriors outside hitter Lauren VanderWal in check. She had just four kills and five attacking errors in the contest.

Just 20 days later, the Warriors came out on top, 25-20, 25-17, and 25-20, and this time VanderWal was better, racking up 16 kills.

With the exception of top-seeded Ferris State, most teams in the GLIAC Tournament have split their matchups throughout the season.

“I think this tournament, more than any year I can think of, is as competitive as it’s ever been,” said Huskies coach Matt Jennings. “Ferris is … going be top seat, and host past the quarterfinal. I mean they’re a really good team.

“Two through six have beat each other up all year. So if you ask any of our coaches in the league right now, ‘Who’s the favorite to win or how’s it going to work out? I think they’d all kind of chuckle and say, I don’t know.’ It’s gonna be really competitive.”

The Huskies come into Wednesday’s match riding a three-match winning streak. They have gained a lot of momentum since Oct. 16, as they have gone 12-5 over their last 17 matches.

“I think we can just play with the mentality that every game could be our last,” said senior middle blocker Janie Grindland Saturday. “We just have to leave it all out on the floor. I think it’s a great opportunity for us to build on this energy that we have, and win some games in the postseason.”

Game time

Opening serve for Wednesday’s match is set for 7 p.m.
