Huskies mourn the passing of Steve Jensen

HOUGHTON — Former Michigan Tech hockey forward Steve Jensen passed away on November 29 at the age of 67.

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jensen played 81 games for the Huskies over two seasons from 1973-75 and tallied 74 points with 33 goals and 41 assists. He was a member of the 1975 NCAA National Championship Team and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 1974 and 1975. He was an All-WCHA Honorable Mention selection in 1975.

Jensen played on Team USA at the Innsbruck 1976 Olympics and was tied for the tournament lead with six goals through six games. He was also on the US National Team in 1977, 1978, and 1983, winning the 1976 Canada Cup.

Jensen was selected in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft in the fourth round as the 58th pick overall by the Minnesota North Stars and went on to play 438 NHL games for the North Stars and LA Kings from 1976-82. He tallied 220 NHL points with 113 goals and 107 assists. He became only the fifth American in NHL history to score more than 100 career goals.

Steve served as the founding owner and director of the Heartland Hockey Camp in Deerwood, Minnesota for 39 years. Additionally, Steve served USA Hockey for 17 years as a certified hockey official and from 1985-98, officiated over 1,500 USA youth hockey games.
