Reichstag Moment

To the editor: After reading a number of anti-Bergman letters to the editor, as well as calling those who “stormed” the Capitol building on Jan 6, “violent rioters,” one has to wonder if any of these Naysayers ever heard the phrase, “Reichstag Moment?” The Reichstag fire occurred when Hitler’s National Socialists (the brown shirts), masquerading as communists (the black shirts), stormed and burned down the German Reichstag building. This was four weeks after Hitler was sworn in as chancellor of Germany. The date of the fire was Monday Feb. 27, 1933. There has been ...

Bottle deposits, not recycling

To the editor: I was struck by the altruistic tone of Derek Bajema’s guest column on May 12. The president and chief executive officer of the Michigan Soft Drink Association described his industry’s “Bring Every Bottle Back” effort, including an enhanced recycling initiative in Marquette County. Projects like these, he says, will decrease the amount of plastic bottles in landfills and trash, reducing the soft drink industry’s “plastic footprint and creating a more circular economy for our 100% recyclable plastic bottles.” It’s a lovely vision, and that is just about ...

Enbridge causes conflict, climate change

To the editor: There is a large tar sands pipeline currently being constructed from Canada through the midwest, ending at Lake Superior in Superior, Wisconsin. It is called the Line 3 replacement project, but in reality it is a brand new pipeline that is larger and has the same diameter as the Keystone XL Pipeline. The company behind it is Enbridge, a Canadian Oil company that is responsible for a massive oil spill in Michigan, in which 1.2 million gallons of unrefined oil spilled on the Kalamazoo River in 2010. Enbridge is the same company responsible for Line 5 in Michigan, and is ...

Brockway Mountain clean-up

To the editor: On March 21, 2020, we had a fun, little bike race and reception planned called the Brockway Mountain Challenge. It was a small annual event that supported Copper Harbor’s winter trails. We had several generous supporters, namely the big three – Bell’s Beer, RC Mechanical and Ferrellgas that have continually contributed to our community. Thank you! There were a few attempts to reschedule, but we were not able to put anything together until May 1, 2021, when we established the Brockway Mountain Clean-up or “Adopt-A-Brockway”. We decided to clean the mountain ...

Follow the Commandments

To the editor: The Trumpublicans, aka the Republican Party, at one time told us Sarah Palin was presidential material. To them she was known as one of true faith and conviction, a darling of the conservative Christian movement. Apparently her “faith” wasn’t strong enough to protect her or her son, and both got COVID-19. “My case is perhaps one of those that proves anyone can catch this.” She urged Americans to wear masks. “It’s better than doing nothing to slow the spread.” This serves as a good example of the shallowness, hypocrisy, and diminishment of ...
