Michigan Republican’s Legacy

To the editor: The Republicans have controlled the Michigan Senate since 1992. That’s 29 straight years. Republicans have controlled the Michigan House for 21 of 29 years since 1992. Republicans have controlled the Michigan Executive since 1992 with the exception of the three terms of Governors Granholm and Whitmer. For 14 years Republicans controlled all three branches of the state government. Why is it that Republicans have been in power for so long, yet our infrastructure is crumbling, wages are stagnant and Michigan is failing? With nearly 30 years of Republican ...

Corporations defund Bergman

To the editor: The first quarterly report of the Federal Election Commission makes clear that many corporations that donated to Bergman’s 2020 campaign have, so far, defunded him for his 2022 campaign. Their decision is no doubt a result of Bergman’s promoting the Big Lie that Donald Trump won the 2020 election and his voting against certification of the election of Joseph Biden on Jan. 6. It is hard to believe that he voted the way he did immediately after the insurrection in the Capitol Building with its link to white supremacy. The responses of CEOs of two corporations to the ...

Flag failure

To the editor: An open letter to all: The American flag that flies in front of the Laurium Village Hall does not fly anymore. It should, but the lack of attention prevents it from flying. For almost two weeks, it has been in a knotted wad sitting there at the top of the flagpole. The Village Administrator has been aware of the problem for at least a week, but is apparently too busy to do anything about it. It’s a shame that all of those that served from WW2 and since have to witness this mess.

Living your Faith

To the editor: Can you imagine living in such a chaotic and hopeless set of circumstances that you’re willing to sell everything you have to hire a smuggler to sneak your young son or daughter into the United States? Hurricane devastation, rampant corruption, and near apocalyptic social and economic collapse in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador prompt thousands of families each year to put their kids on such perilous northbound journeys praying that the kids they love might ultimately find better lives. Affluent Americans heap love and affection on our own kids and fret ...

Derek Chauvin’s eyes

To the editor: What did you see when you looked at Derek Chauvin as he heard the jury’s verdict? His cold determination not to feel remorse for his huge mistake was frightening and off-putting, but it taught me something about myself. A wise person asked, “How do you know when it is morning?” The correct answer is not when you hear the birds sing or when you can see outside your window, but when you are able to look into the eyes of a stranger and see they’re a brother or sister. So, as I think again of that look in Derek Chauvin’s eyes, the same look that we saw when he ...

Line 5 is safe

To the editor: Pipelines are the safest, most economical, and environmentally safe way to transport hydrocarbons. Transporting hydrocarbons using rail, truck, or barging proposed by Governor Whitmer and the UP Propane Research Team (UPPRT) is much less safe. Claiming that Line 5 is not safe is a mischaracterization of the technical facts. Line 5 under the Mackinac Straits has operated successfully for over 60 years, despite anchor strikes and other hazards, and could operate another 60 years with little probability of failure. It can certainly safely operate for another four years ...
