Careful where you put money

To the editor: Since 2005 my wife and I have owned about seven Toyota cars and trucks, including: a RAV4, a Highlander, a Tacoma, and at least four Tundras. We currently own a Highlander and lease a 2021 Tundra. We have purchased or leased these fine vehicles because we’ve felt they were the best vehicles available, and we’ve been entirely satisfied with them. However, after reading an article in “Bridge Magazine (4/18/21) we will, in the future, re-evaluate our auto purchases because of Toyota’s practice of giving sizable financial support to Michigan State, U.S. Reps. Jack ...

Naming conventions

To the editor: Lenin (1870-1924) said, “the capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.” Now capitalists buy the rope from their Chinese Communist “friends” and sell it to us. Will we hang ourselves? Lenin called liberals “useful idiots” but so are those capitalists who worship money instead of God and don’t care that they are helping America’s enemies destroy the country. Most of the mainstream news media act as propagandists for left-wing politicians. They distort and suppress the truth. Last year President Donald Trump labeled COVID-19 as the ...

Protecting our climate: What role do we play?

To the editor: Sometimes we underestimate the role we can play as a citizen. History focuses on the dramatic. For instance, the World War II generation will always be admired for its defense of Democracy. Later, in less dramatic form, we held firm against totalitarianism facing down the Soviet Empire until it finally evaporated. We did this not as Republicans or Democrats, but as Americans. It was the unified front of free nations, led by America, which led to success. Today, the biggest challenge facing humanity is our rapidly warming climate and intensifying destructive ...

Support Biden’s rescue plan

To the editor: President Joseph Biden’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) should command pro-life support. It directly saves lives by expanding vaccines and fights poverty with unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, rent assistance and the new child tax credit. Official Catholic teaching says helping the poor is pro-life. Commonweal, a pro-life Catholic publication founded in 1924, reports, “The ARP is perhaps the single greatest expression of solidarity in American politics since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. The law includes an enormous increase in the child tax credit; and is ...

Last best hope

To the editor: Any informed reflection on our nation’s past reveals that the “good old days” weren’t so good for all of those who call themselves Americans. Any such reflection clearly reveals an ever present campaign to consciously marginalize targeted groups of Americans in order to ensure the economic advantage of others. Empirical evidence to support the existence and magnitude of this chronic social malignancy abounds, yet many Americans prefer to believe that they are completely “self-made” men and women; long-suffering triumphant warriors on the battlefield of ...

Circles of community

To the editor: Recently you might have seen yard signs that say “Many Faiths, One Community.” The way we think of community is key. While belonging to a church is a choice, we are, of necessity, members of several communities, beginning with family and extending to the planet. Each of us is like a pebble dropped into still water, generating expanding circles of waves. Each outward ring involves more diversity. All faith traditions include the Golden Rule, an ethical policy which makes community possible. If our personal behavior is aligned with the ideal of doing no harm, all ...
