Consider the other side

To the editor: I am compelled to write to you after having listened to last nights’ City Council meeting (Feb. 24), where I saw four people destroy the livelihood of the residents who live, by choice, in Coles Creek. I know, mind my own expletive business, and I would, if these four people would have done the same. Meanwhile, they will continue to live in their perfect locations, undisturbed, as the precious paradise once adored by many, is in jeopardy. Successful can drive

To the editor: As a new resident and coach to the U.P., I had never even heard of a “can drive” until a few months ago and had no idea what to expect when the Hancock-Lake Linden/Jeffers JV hockey team hosted one on Saturday, January 31. In a year that has been filled with challenges, uncertainty, and controversy, the can drive did what, in my opinion, is one of the best parts of sports: it brought people together. Is charter school necessary?

To the editor: Can the Copper Country afford to fund an experimental Finnish-themed K-8 charter school in addition to supporting the existing public schools? Proponents of the Copper Island Academy, a K-8 charter school to be located near the airport, say they intend to attract an unspecified number of students away from existing Hancock and Calumet elementary and middle schools along with the tax-supported state school aid dollars that would go along with them. To the editor: Ever since we signed the Baraga County Manifesto, we have seen a massive tidal wave of support and encouragement. This feedback comes from people and places I never heard of before, all wishing to give us a pat on the back or to inquire how their community can follow our lead. Cults

To the editor: Historically, there have been thousands of cults. Three prominent types are Political, Religious and New Age. Political, racist, or terrorist cults are fueled by belief in changing society by overthrowing the perceived enemy or getting rid of evil forces. The leader professes to be all knowing and all powerful. Groups tend to operate as secret cells. Often members of the group are armed and ready to engage in violent activities. Sometimes these groups meet in secret with coded language and handshakes. Members consider themselves an elite cadre ready to go to battle. ...
