Finlandia springs trap on Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wis. — Freshman John Schutz broke a school record as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (4-21) beat Maranatha Baptist (4-20) 82-65, Saturday afternoon at Sabercat Gym. Finlandia came out on fire, taking a 17-7 lead at the 13:16 mark.  Maranatha Baptist came storming back with a 13-3 run to make it 20 with 6:39 to go.  The rest of the half saw the Lions and Sabercats trading buckets.  In the second half, sophomore Logan Depew drained a triple to start a 16-4 run to seal the game. Lions look to close out season strong against Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. — To say it has been a difficult year for the Finlandia Lions women’s hockey team, would be an understatement. The Lins are 0-23 on the season and 0-14 in the NCHA in coach Mike Kuruc’s first season. The team set an NCAA record for goals against (19) and saves in a loss at Adrian (111). Despite the uphill battle the Lions have had all season, Kuruc says that the spirits of the team are still high. Akins set to play at Finlandia University

HANCOCK — Elijah Akins (Bremerton, Wash.) has committed to play for the Finlandia University men’s soccer team. He is planning on majoring in Business. HANCOCK — Finlandia University Esports FIFA took on Clarke and Averett, Monday. Clarke – L 2-0 (4-1, 7-4) Game 1 – Chelan Gonzalez as Paris, Clarke as Munich Finlandia had to play some tight defense immediately into the start of the game making some great saves to keep the score 0-0. Rutherford to play for Finlandia

HANCOCK — Martha Rutherford (Negaunee, Mich.) has committed to play for the Finlandia University volleyball team. She is planning on majoring in Business. Rutherford had a strong career at Negaunee High School. As a senior, she was All-Mid-Peninsula Conference honorable mention and Academic All-State. Rutherford helped the Miners win a district title in 2020 and qualified for the U.P. Division I Girls State Track and Field Championships in the shot put. Rutherford is a member of the National Honor Society and was a Business Professional’s of America state finalist.

Bartle named C2C Player of the Week

HANCOCK — Junior Natalie Bartle has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 23. Members of the C2C are Christopher Newport, Finlandia, Mount Mary, Mary Washington, Pratt, Salisbury, UC Santa Cruz and Warren Wilson. This is the second time that Bartle has received the award. Bartle had a record-breaking and milestone setting week in helping the Lions go 2-0.  She scored 35 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a 103-62 win over C2C foe Mount Mary (Feb. 10).
