H-PT receives clean audit for 2018-19 school year

HOUGHTON — Houghton-Portage Township School District received a clean audit for the 2018-19 school year.

The audit, prepared by Rukkila, Negro & Associates, was accepted by the board at its Monday meeting.

The auditors had no findings or recommendations.

The district’s general fund balance was listed at $2,037,701 as of June 30, 2019, a decrease of 1.3% from the previous year.

State and federal funds decreased by $82,000 from the previous year, . The district’s blended student count declined by 14.55 full-time equivalents. But the amount it received per student went up, as the state foundation grant of $7,871 per student marked a $240 increase over the previous year.

About 35% of the district’s students come from other districts through the School of Choice program.

District expenses increased 1% from the previous year, driven by the addition of a new kindergarten teacher and the district’s Junior Officer Reserve Training Corps program, which had $75,000 of new expenses, the report said. The JROTC students also accounted for a $20,000 increase in transfers from other school districts.

JROTC instructor John Sullivan also gave a presentation to the board Monday, Superintendent Doreen Kramer said. The program, which moved from Hancock two years ago, has 56 students.

“He’s pleased it’s growing,” she said.

The board went into executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss Kramer’s annual evaluation.
