Three arrested on trespassing charges
KEWEENAW COUNTY — Three people were arrested in Houghton Township Sunday evening and charged with trespassing, larceny, and violation of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s shelter-in-place order, after they were apprehended exiting one of the shafts comprising the Copper Falls Mine.
The Sheriff’s Office said they received an anonymous call in reference suspicious activity at the shaft on March 29, and arrested the three at 8:50 p.m.
The arrests were made after a joint investigation between the Sheriff’s Office, Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, and the Keweenaw County Mine Inspector, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A currently uncomfirmed report states that the three were mining for rock and ore samples on the seventh level, or 420-foot, level of the mine.
No further details on the incident are available at this time, pending arraignment on the current charges, but the Sheriff’s Office said additonal charges may be filed.
