Collision in Portage Township Friday led to death of Houghton man
A bicycle/vehicle crash on Friday resulted in the death of an elderly Houghton man, according to a release from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies from that department were dispatched to U.S. 41 near Nara Park in Portage Township Friday at approximately 2:20 p.m., in response to the accident. Preliminary investigations shows that a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Jordan LaTendresse, of Marquette, was northbound on U.S. 41 near Nara Park Road, when 69 year-old Roger Kieckhafer, of Houghton, attempted to cross the highway on a bicycle, and rode into the path La Tendresse’s vehicle. LaTendresse attempted to avoid the bicyclist, but was unable to do so. Kieckhafer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Houghton Police Department, Hancock Police Department, MTU Public Safety, and Mercy Ambulance.
Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash. The Sheriff’s Office states the crash is still under investigation.
