Houghton working to improve communication, easing anxiety, stress

HOUGHTON — Principal Cole Klein on Friday said the school is working diligently to find ways to increase ease of communications, increase access to support and resources, and decrease overall stress and anxiety that is inadvertently being generated with current learning conditions.

“We are aware of the many concerns felt by parents, students, and staff and are actively working to continue to improve conditions for all,” he said in a Friday email.

Beginning Monday, the high school will implement a “Rolling Snow Day,” through which each day of the week will have a different department giving students a day off from new content and assignments. Instead, teachers will make themselves available for individual or group review/catch-up/clarification on missing assignments. Parents or students (who) are struggling, need support, or have questions can schedule a time to connect with individual teachers (email, phone, Google meet, in-person). Information should be posted in your child’s Google Classrooms and appointments should be scheduled directly with each teacher.

Below is the schedule:

• Monday: No English classes. Tutoring/Support available. Check Google Classroom for details.

• Tuesday: No Math classes. Tutoring/Support available. Check Google Classroom for details.

• Wednesday: No Social Studies classes. Tutoring/Support available. Check Google Classroom for details.

• Thursday: No Science classes. Tutoring/Support available. Check Google Classroom for details.

• Friday: No Elective classes. Tutoring/Support available. Check Google Classroom for details.

*(CTE and Dual Enrollment classes will meet as scheduled every day)

“Additionally, we are reviewing other strategies and new policies to also address the concerns of our constituents, which we aim to have in place after the holiday break,” Kein added. “In the meantime, please help us to keep our pulse on your viewpoint and also to support you by completing the BRIEF survey for parents online by Sunday, Dec. 13. Staff are busy reaching out to struggling students and families and will use information gleaned from this survey to refocus their efforts accordingly.”

“Our goal,” said Klein, “is to identify students who are struggling academically and/or emotionally, reach out to parents ASAP, and create a plan to provide appropriate support for next week. Thank you for all of your help providing structure and guidance at home for your child. We will all work together to get through this challenging time!”

Starting at $3.50/week.
