November midterm election candidate forum

The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country (LWVCC) and the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is convening a Candidate Forum to be held for State Senate 38th District, State Representative Houghton County Sheriff, Houghton County Commissioners District 2, District 3 and District 5 who are on the official ballot in contested races. The Forum will be held on Friday, October 21 at Hancock Middle School Auditorium, 501 Campus Drive. The State Senate 38th will be held at 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a 15 minute break, and then from 7:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m. the forum for contested races for Houghton County Commissioners and Houghton County Sheriff will be conducted.

Candidates invited include State Senate 38th District, John Braamse, Democrat, Ed McBroom, Republican and Wade Roberts, Green Party; Houghton County Sheriff, Joshua Saaranen, Republican, and Roger Sullivan, Non-Partisan Association; Houghton County Commissioner District 2, Daniel Watrous, Democrat, Joel Keranen, Republican and Timothy Sears, US Taxpayer Party of Michigan; Houghton County Commissioner District 3, Glenn Anderson, Democrat and Dan Holcomb, Republican; Houghton County Commissioner District 5 Roy Britz, Republican and Daniel Niemela, Non-Partisan Association.

The LWV is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages citizens to play an informed and active role in government. Any person of voting age, male or female, may become a LWVCC member. The LWV is nonpartisan and does not support or oppose particular political parties or candidates. The LWV does take positions on issues after a lengthy member study and consensus process.

As this is a forum, not a debate, candidates are asked to respond only to the questions asked by the moderator. They are; however, free to address any appropriate issue during opening and closing remarks.

This is a LWVCC co-sponsored Forum, and as such, we will not allow any campaigning material inside the Hancock Middle School Auditorium. We will also not allow any loud or rude comments in the form of clapping, booing, hissing, whistling, yelling, etc. from the audience. If this occurs, we will stop the forum until the audience member(s) can be quieted before we will continue.
