School millages were on the ballot

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Voter turnout was increasing around mid-morning Tuesday at the city of Hancock voting location, at Lakeview Manor on West Quincy Street.

HANCOCK – Voters in Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga counties went to the polls Tuesday to decide on a millage renewal request that will fund the Copper Country Intermediate School District’s Career and Technical Education programs for the next 10 years. There were no other proposals on the ballot.

The request is for the renewal (0.9797 mills) of the current CTE funding approved by voters in 2017. Since its original passage, CCISD CTE has expanded to 13 programs, serving over 350 students across three counties. If the renewal request passes, these programs would remain accessible to students from all local school districts at no cost to the districts themselves.

In addition to the CCISD request, three area school districts held elections Tuesday.

• Ewen – Trout Creek Area Schools. Voters were asked to consider a $6.1 million bond millage that will replace another bond expected to end this year, ensuring continued facility improvements and educational resources

• Dollar Bay Tamarack City Schools. The district sought renewal of a non-homestead operating millage to support retaining critical staff and purchasing education tools used in classrooms. This millage affects commercial and rental properties but not private residences.

• Ontonagon Area Schools and Baraga Area Schools residents in each of these districts were asked to approve sinking fund millage renewals to support projects that improve facilities and maintain educational infrastructure.

The results of Tuesday’s elections were not available at press time. The Daily Mining Gazette will have election results in Thursday’s edition.

Starting at $3.50/week.
