Person believed to have jumped from Mackinac Bridge
ST. IGNACE — The body of a person who is believed to have jumped from the Mackinac Bridge Thursday, was recovered Friday evening. On Thursday afternoon Michigan State Police (MSP) issued a release stating members of the public may notice an increased presence of law enforcement and United States Coast Guard personnel in the Straits of Mackinac. At the time, MSP said there was no danger to the public and that personnel were conducting search and recovery operations.
According to an MSP press release, at approximately 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, troopers from the St. Ignace post responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on the Mackinac Bridge. Upon arrival, troopers located the unoccupied vehicle. A subsequent review of video footage showed the vehicle coming to a stop, after which an individual exited the vehicle and jumped from the bridge.
Based on evidence recovered from the vehicle, the individual was identified, and MSP notified the next of kin. At around 6 p.m. Friday, the body of the individual who was the focus of the search and recovery efforts in the Straits of Mackinac was recovered.
