WUPHD: Frat house is possible COVID-19 exposure site

HOUGHTON — The Theta Tau – Beta Chapter’s house in Houghton has been identified as a possible COVID-19 exposure site, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department announced Saturday.

Exposure may have occurred during events held at the house on Aug. 24 and Aug. 25. The house is located at 407 Fairview St. in Houghton.

Case investigation revealed social distancing and masking guidelines were not observed at the event, which a COVID-positive person attended, the WUPHD said.

People are asked to contact their healthcare provider and notify them of possible exposure if they attended the event, have had close contact with someone who visited the site, and have or develop symptoms such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, or a new loss of taste or smell.

Theta Tau is an off-campus student fraternal organization not recognized by Michigan Technological University. Formed in 1904, the chapter was suspended in 2013 after failing to comply with alcohol, endangerment, community order, disruptive behavior, and hazing provisions of the student conduct policies, according to the Michigan Tech website. It was permanently expelled in 2017 after two violations of the terms of its suspension.

As of Friday, Michigan Tech has had seven positive tests out of 1,784 given in the past two weeks, for a positive rate of 0.39%.

For general information, call the WUPHD at (906) 482-7382 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
