High School Bowling Team

The Calumet School high school bowling team needs a few more students for the 2019/20 season! The Calumet bowling team includes students from Calumet, Dollar Bay and Lake Linden/Hubbell High School districts.

Since 1998, bowling has been recognized by the Michigan High School Athletic Association as a high school varsity sport. Nine bowling centers in the Upper Peninsula were responsible for making this happen. In 1996, several bowling centers, including Miller’s Lanes in Laurium, created the U.P. Bowling Conference (a club sport was formed) with the goal to make bowling a recognized high school sport. From 1996 to 1998, each bowling center coached a girl’s team and a boy’s team and bowling matches were held throughout the western U.P. During those two years, bowling center proprietors worked with the MHSAA, U.P. school officials and lower Michigan centers to secure school support and bowling was added to the MHSAA list of school sports.

Twenty years later, the fun continues for high school students! High school team bowling is free to the student. No experience or equipment is necessary, just a desire to bowl. Practice is held weekly with a certified varsity coach. Students travel throughout the western U.P. to bowl at various locations for nine Saturdays and enjoy interaction with others. Free transportation is also provided.

We invite you to join the team by attending the meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. at Miller’s Lanes in Laurium. If you are interested and cannot make the meeting please e-mail: millersrecreation@gmail.com
