To the editor: Dillon Geshel is a visionary leader. Director of the Portage Lake District Library since 2015, he has turned it into a happy, thriving center of the community. His staff look forward to coming to work, and library patrons flock to the library to find books, magazines and DVDs, use computers and enormous digital resources, attend public programs, and instill a lifelong love of reading and learning in their children. To the editor: I’m a pro-choice and pro-democracy believer. Also, I believe the new Texas law aborts democracy. How about you? My obituary will not state that I was conceived on June 3, 1932, experienced a heart murmur in July and was born on February 3, 1933. Instead it will state that I received the breath of God on February 3, 1933, and upon my death on ???? returned the breath of life to my Creator. Talking legacy

To the editor: The legacy of a person, in this case a man, is the impact that he has had on the people and the events that surrounded his life. I’m referring to my husband Brian J. McLean. His achievement to earn that title of sheriff with the votes from the people of Houghton County was his greatest accomplishment in his career. Brian’s most endearing quality was the fact that he loved people. He loved talking to them, listening to them, being with them and helping them. Responsibility

To the editor: The anti-vaxers have been busy demonstrating around the country. One person was observed carrying a placard that read: “My body, My choice, Includes vaccines too.” That person should be thankful that parents, without giving a choice to their children, have them vaccinated against various diseases. Another placard stated: “COVID-19 is a scam.” With that line of reasoning, small pox, polio, measles, rubella, chicken pox, and other diseases are also scams. Wind turbines and wood ticks

To the editor: Alright, I’ll do it. As a kid I could never resist throwing a rock at a hornets nest, and I’m still that kid at heart. So here goes, I’m gonna put in a good word for the much-maligned wind farm. I know that’s like defending wood ticks or biting flies, but when I see all the NO WIND TURBINES signs along the roadsides it’s no wonder that nobody is speaking up publicly for them. Time for optimism

To the editor: While news of another flood, hurricane or wildfire is depressing, it is time to be optimistic and respond with action. Nations are acting. The EU and China are crafting legislation to reduce carbon pollution. Canada has a Carbon Pollution Fee. Nations are moving forward to reduce the burning of coal, oil, and gas. National macro-solutions generally come in two strategies. One, is the carbon credit trading system. The second is a carbon pollution penalty.
