The unscenic view

To the editor: A recent story foretold the improvements at the Quincy Hill Scenic Turnout. My question is “Why?” Brush removal on MDOT property will solve no problems since the offending trees are mostly on private property on McKinley St. below. On the other hand, the MDOT parking area up the hill at Cowsit Lats Rd. offers a tremendous view of the Portage Valley. This area is entirely owned by the DOT and will never have a private obstructed view, which is actually far better than the present location. Bridge to nowhere

To the editor: I find the current situation of the lift bridge annoying and inconvenient, as I am sure many people do. The current disruption has made me think further down the road. The bridge came into commission in 1959. Sixty-three years ago, when the bridge started service, we were small communities recovering from the loss of mining in our area. Granted, we had tourists even in those days. However, tourism has grown over the years and become one of the major drivers of our economic life. To the editor: Since the 1950’s, starting with South America, we have trained dictators and their assassin squads around the world, in Fort Benning, at what is now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, and have had them assassinate democratically elected leaders, like Arbenz, Allende, and other leaders in South America, Iran in 1953, Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi assassin squad in Turkey, and currently a Colombian assassin squad killed the leader of Haiti. To the editor: One of my favorite memories of my eight years in active duty Army was the Friday ritual of my 1SG. The grizzled grouch with six deployments would stand at the head of the formation, with his Kentucky drawl, and call a soldier in front of the unit to say the Soldier’s Creed, and then lead us all in the Pledge of Allegiance.
