Bergman disingenuous

To the editor: In reading the article from Friday Aug. 20, Page 3 in the DMG, our U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman tried to explain away his involvement in overturning the results of the 2020 Presidential race. In Bergman’s unbelievably rich statement, full of irony, he states, “We need to make it easy to vote and impossible to cheat.” Congressman Bergman, along with three other Michigan U.S. Congressmen worked their tails off to spread unsubstantiated lies about voter fraud and to decertify results of the election in numerous states in which former President Trump lost, ...

Get vaccinated

To the editor: Sometimes controversial, David Keranen, submits articles here that many people just don’t understand. He is a qualified public educator. Like myself, he uses analogy, comparison, and slight exaggeration. The intent is to make the reader at least consider different views on a topic rather than be stuck in one mode or opinion. Another regular writer here almost always must air her grievances with regards to the sins of man and God’s punishment of them. What is her sin? According to Jesus Christ, man must not cast judgment on one another; this falls upon the ...

Self defeat

To the editor: Making big money by dividing Americans into warring camps involves what I’ve come to call “wedging.” Red states/blue states, black hats/white hats, big time wrestling, Americans love fantasy contests that pit some hastily fabricated group of good guys against the latest version of the evil ones. Intentionally ginning up an endless variety of shocking controversies and exaggerated levels of outrage makes a few people very, very rich and the rest of us increasingly more isolated, poorer, dumber, and just plain nuts. “The real problem with America is those ...

Luck of the draw

To the editor: When and where we are born is a matter of the luck of the draw. Our life is in the cards, so to speak. Sometimes we seem to be like wind-up toys, running around doing our thing, then falling down and needing a re-wind. Perhaps we are like automatons acting out the programs instilled in us by millions of causes and effects traceable all the way back to the creation of the universe. Consider a child in the 17th century that is born into a Buddhist family in China. In all likelihood that child will be a lifelong Buddhist. Envision a child in the 10th century that is born ...

Verna Mize thanks

To the editor: I have many people to thank for their part in making the first ever Verna Mize Triathlon a big success! First, we all are eternally grateful to Verna Mize for her work and determination to save Lake Superior for all of us to enjoy. I want to thank her cousin, Melissa Lewis, who granted me permission to name this event after Verna. I want to thank Eric Waara for keeping Verna in the conversation and moving her memorial to the waterfront to watch over our precious resource. Thanks to the City Council for allowing me the liberty to create this event and to Angela Luskin ...
