Verna Mize Mini-Triathlon

To the editor: I would like to pass on my gratitude to Mary Kaminski for all of her efforts in organizing the first annual Verna Mize Mini-Triathlon. A lot of thought, planning and communication goes into starting an event like this, and it was clearly a labor of love for Mary, who was everywhere at once making sure the event went smoothly, and educating everyone on the works of Verna Mize, the inspiration for the event. To the editor: Across Michigan, there are approximately 61,000 youth who identify as LGBTQ+. Did you know there is an outdated method of therapy still utilized today aimed at changing these youths’ sexual orientation and gender identity? It’s called conversion therapy. To the editor: While we are struggling to end the COVID-19 crisis, it seems unfair that we have to endure another worldwide crisis. However, we are beginning to experience the negative effects of climate change, and we desperately need to ramp up mitigation efforts. With present planning by governments around the world, the average surface temperature of the earth will continue to rise for perhaps 30 or 40 years or more. Calumet Kids Fishing Derby

To the editor: Our 16th Annual Kids Fishing Derby on July 17 at the Swedetown Pond was a fun time had by all. 181 kids enjoyed catching hundreds of fish with a free Vollwerths hot dog lunch when the fishing ended. Prizes were awarded to the largest Bluegill, Perch, Bullhead and the smallest fish, and every kid who registered a fish was able to pick a prize. The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club would like to thank the following for their support and donations.
