Enough is enough

To the editor: At the Georgia state GOP convention, the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was censured for refusing to “recalculate,” i.e., cheat, the results of the 2020 presidential election. Raffensperger is a Republican, who supported Donald Trump and voted for him, yet he was punished for doing his job with integrity. That was bad enough, but even worse is that he and his family have received hundreds of death threats from Trump supporters, to the point that the whole family had to go into hiding. Pledge?

To the editor: When I went to public school in the 1950’s, we’d start each day with a pledge. It concluded with the words, “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” I’m beginning to think that some of my classmates weren’t listening or were listening and didn’t take that pledge to heart. Liberty, among many other things, means having the opportunity to make a living, having freedom of movement, being able to express ideas, and having a real chance to pursue the American dream. To the editor: Thanks to the city of Houghton—especially to City Manager Eric Waara, Police Chief John Donnelly, and the Public Works Department—for a great job repainting crosswalks in the downtown area. Repainting of the four crosswalks at the intersection of Montezuma Avenue and Huron Street is especially appreciated. To the editor: If they didn’t have double standards, many people would have no standards at all. Consider the Russia Collusion delusion promoted by Donald Trump’s enemies during his presidency. We were told a big lie, that Russians helped Donald Trump win the 2016 election by vote fraud.
