Boys Basketball: Simonsen sets scoring record in loss to Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — Brad Simonsen set a Houghton High School scoring record with 63 points in an 88-83 loss Tuesday.

Simonsen, a senior, scored 24 points in the fourth quarter, including four 3-pointers. He finished with seven triples. Simonsen shot 23 of 45 overall, 7 of 18 on 3-pointers and was 10 of 13 on free throws.

Simonsen, a Michigan Tech basketball commit, unseats Gary Lange’s previous school record of 60 points he scored in 1970 against Jeffers. Lange’s teammate Barney Salo scored 48 points in the same game of a 134-72 win.

“He has worked hard for four years and is very deserving of the record,” Houghton head coach Jared Lawson said.

But as a team, the Gremlins were unable to thwart the Hematites’ attack.

“Our defense did not show up tonight,” Lawson said. “We lacked the needed effort to win a game. Everyone is accountable for better defense. From coaches to players.”

Houghton visits Jeffers on Tuesday.
