Ishpeming tops Lake Linden-Hubbell

LAKE LINDEN — The Ishpeming Hematites girls’ basketball team took care of the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes on Saturday in an non-conference 66-28 win. The Hematites (6-11) averaged more than 12 points per quarter in a game where they scored eight three-pointers

“We traditionally have been shooting well,” said their head coach Ryan Reichel. “That came out today as there was a good energy on the floor and the girls moved the ball around well.

The Lakes (4-12) played their best ball in the opening minutes as they tied the game at six. However the Hematites went on a 12-2 scoring run to end the first at 18-8. It was downhill from there for the Lakes as they were rattled by the Hematites’ full-court press and began to turn the ball over. They only scored six points in the second.

“That is the story of our season,” said LL-H head coach Jack Johnson. “We get a little pressure on us and the girls get rattled and start to throw the ball away.”

At half time Ishpeming led 35-14.

The third and fourth quarters only got better for the Hematites as they outscored the Lakes 31-14.

They were led by junior Madisyn Mead who had 22 points on the afternoon including two three-pointers. Tia Mattila followed with 11 points and Emma Poirier rounded it out with 10.

“We are struggling to put together a complete game,” added Johnson. “Success for us comes in short stretches. We know what we need to do. We just need to execute it.”

Senior Jamie Hendrickson led the Lakes with 12 points including two triples. Megan Corrigan followed with seven.

Republic-Michigamme will face the Lakes tonight in Lake Linden.
